✨ How to master writing with ChatGPT

Find all the prompts inside 👀

Happy Thursday, Jerry here. Google just released their own version of ChatGPT Plus called Gemini Advanced—and this is some solid competition for OpenAI. It outperformed GPT-4 (the ChatGPT Plus model) in 7 out of 8 benchmark tests. So… GPT 4.5 soon?

In today’s email:

  • Writing that works with ChatGPT: why you always want to change the default voice of ChatGPT and what to do instead.

  • ChatGPT for business writing: become everyone’s favorite colleague by making complex things simple.

  • And the latest AI tools everyone is raving about.

There is one universal truth when it comes to writing with ChatGPT.

And that is that you should never use the default writing style.

You want to avoid the default style as it’s often repetitive, unoriginal, and hard to read.

To illustrate an example, let’s look at the results of this common ChatGPT prompt: 💬 ‘Write an announcement for LinkedIn that we have a new product launched at Org called Product X’

Besides that it’s very generic and boring, it’s also difficult to read. The readability of this is set at a 13th grade reading level. It’s a combination of long sentences, complicated words, and an overuse of the passive voice.

In the USA, 54% of adults have a literacy below sixth-grade reading level. That means by using the default voice of ChatGPT you could immediately lose out on tons of people. And the USA is not alone in this.

So how can we make more impact with ChatGPT writing?

You guessed it: writing simply.

What do Jeff Bezos, Warren Buffet, and viral LinkedIn writers like Sahil Bloom and Justin Welsch have in common? They all write extremely simple.

Checked via hemingwayapp.com

Even the shareholder letters of Jeff Bezos are written on average at a 7th-grade reading level. Simple writing shows that you can think clearly and are able to to make something complex easy to understand. And that is a superpower.

As one of my favorite quotes says: “Any fool can make something complicated. It takes a genius to make it simple”

Exercise: what is the grade reading level of your latest email that you sent? Or your latest LinkedIn post? Copy and paste your text directly into hemingwayapp.com and find out + tips on how to improve.

A simple way to make ChatGPT write simply is to add “Write at a flesch reading score of 80 or higher”. This the equivalent of a 6th grade reading level—but without the childish tone.

To unpack this more, let’s dive into how to use ChatGPT for business writing.

The power writing prompt

The power writing prompt lets you turn your requests (e.g. ‘write an email to X about X,Y, and Z’) into a powerful message that follows business writing principles.

Writing instructions:
• Use clear, direct language and avoid complex terminology.
• Write at a flesch reading score of 80 or higher.
• Use the active voice.
• Try to avoid adverbs.

• Use jargon where relevant.
• Avoid being salesy or overly enthusiastic and instead express calm confidence.

[Your input on what you want ChatGPT to write about]

Some of the communication secrets from Jeff Bezos, one of the worlds greatest communicators, is included in this prompt. I found about those via the book The Bezos Blueprint (awesome read).

If you have ChatGPT Plus you can either set the prompt above as your custom instructions, or use the GPT version of this prompt.

This prompt is of course not the holy grail, you need to find your own sweet spot. But it should give you a starting point to write more people-centric messages that people want to read.

Next week we’ll dive deeper into social media writing with ChatGPT (or Gemini?). Stay tuned!
